Safe Sanctuaries
Our church has developed policies for ministries that work with minors and vulnerable populations. Staff and volunteers who work with children, youth, and vulnerable adults will complete a series of background screenings and awareness training.
WhaT is Safe Sanctuaries?
Many denominations have a background check and training program for their volunteers. In the United Methodist Church, our program is referred to as Safe Sanctuaries. There are two primary components of our Safe Sanctuaries program - background screening and sexual abuse awareness training.
Background Screening
A background screening is more than just a criminal background check. Volunteers start by submitting an application, which is reviewed by one of our ministry leaders. A criminal background check is conducted which might include national, state, and county criminal databases, as well as identity verification. Interviews to complete reference checks, confirm information, and gather consensus around ministry placement are conducted. Information gathered during background screenings are confidential.
Training & Sexual Abuse Awareness
All volunteers will receive training about our policies and procedures, as well as about sexual abuse awareness. As we work with children, youth, and vulnerable adults, it's important to know about best practices to identify signs of sexual abuse, prevent sexual abuse within the church setting, and promote a culture of awareness and accountability.
